Ledger.com/Start® — Official Site® Guide to Getting Started
This guide walks you through the complete setup process for your Ledger hardware wallet. Whether you're unboxing a new device or securing your digital assets for the first time, this overview helps you start safely and confidently.
Welcome to Ledger Hardware Security
Ledger devices are built with a secure element chip designed to keep private keys offline and protected from online threats. Using this guide, you'll learn how to activate your wallet, install Ledger Live, and make sure your recovery phrase is stored safely.
1. Prepare Your Device
When you first open the package, confirm everything looks intact. You should find the Ledger device, a USB cable, quick-start information, and recovery sheets. If anything appears unusual or unsealed, pause setup and consult support before proceeding.
2. Power On the Wallet
Connect your Ledger device to your computer or smartphone. Follow the instructions on the device display and select “Set up as new device.” You’ll be asked to create a PIN code, which unlocks your device. Choose a code only you know, and avoid saving it digitally.
3. Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
Your Ledger device will show a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the backup key for your wallet. Write it down on the provided sheet in the exact order shown. Never take a screenshot, never type it into a phone or computer, and never share it with anyone—not even support.
4. Install Ledger Live
To manage your crypto, install Ledger Live, the official wallet and portfolio app. Ledger Live guides you through verification, device updates, and security checks. Once connected, it becomes your main hub for managing coins, tokens, and hardware updates.
5. Add Crypto Accounts
Inside Ledger Live, open the “Accounts” tab. Select an asset such as Bitcoin or Ethereum and install the required app on your device. Adding accounts enables you to deposit and track funds safely through the verified Ledger interface.
6. Receive and Send Crypto Securely
To receive crypto, choose an account and generate a receiving address. Always confirm the address directly on your Ledger device to avoid phishing or manipulation. When sending crypto, double-check amounts, networks, and on-device confirmations before approving the transaction.
Security Recommendations
- Update firmware and apps regularly through Ledger Live.
- Keep your 24-word recovery sheet offline and stored securely.
- Never enter your recovery phrase into a website or app.
- Avoid unverified browser extensions, tools, or pop-ups.
- Consider using a fireproof and waterproof backup solution.
Troubleshooting and Tips
If Ledger Live cannot detect your device, try another USB port, cable, or restart the app. For mobile users, confirm Bluetooth permissions if using a compatible model. If your device resets after incorrect PIN attempts, simply restore it using your recovery phrase.
